DECEMBER WEDNESDAY, JAMAICA PLAIN CHURCH KITCHEN

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Hairnets. Gloves. Aprons. Knives. Soup needs some love, says Allan. Amril’s grilling chicken. Carlos finishes the salads. One course down, three to go! Scarlet and Mai multiply cookie measures by ten, substitute cornmeal for scarce flour. I think of loaves and fishes. The clock ticks. Uh-oh! DoorDash picks up in fifteen! Kiss 108 sets our pace with «Despacito,» and out come the cookies, just in time. Drivers arrive, head out, and disappear into Centre Street traffic. First shift’s done! Mai turns up Pink Martini’s «Sympathique.» I catch her eye, and in the lull before the next pickup, we dance.
